たて【盾・楯】
1 〔身を守る武具〕 a shield; (小型の円盾) a buckler; (紋章付きの) an escutcheon.

盾で一撃を受け止める take a blow on one's shield.

●立ち木を盾にする shield (oneself) [hide] 《from gunfire》 behind a tree; use a tree as a shield.

●自らが盾となって守る expose oneself to cover 《the flagship》.

2 〔立場を守る手段〕

●…を盾に取って on the strength of…; on grounds of…; on the grounds 《that…》

・病気を盾に on the pretext that one is ill

・法律を盾に取って using the law as a pretext; exploiting the law (as a defense)

・私を盾にする気? Are you planning to hide behind me?

●彼は私の盾となってその非難に立ち向かってくれた. He shielded me and rebutted the charges.

3 〔賞などとして贈られる記念盾〕 a shield (trophy); a (shield-shaped) plaque.

●入選して賞状と盾をもらった. I received a certificate of merit and a shield as a prize [trophy].

盾の半面 the other side of the coin; a hidden aspect.

●それは盾の半面にすぎない. That's only one side (of the coin). | You're only looking at one aspect of the problem.

・盾の半面しか見ない only see one side of the coin [aspect of a situation]; fail to see the whole picture.

盾の両面 both [(the) two] sides (of a coin).

●盾の両面を見よ. Consider both sides of the question. | Look at both sides (of the coin).
